Blower Door Test Requirements in Denver
Since the adoption of the 2021 IECC Residential Energy Codes, blower door air leakage testing is now a requirement for most new construction projects in the Denver Metro area.
ACH Requirements for Residential Blower Door Tests
- Single-family homes – 4 air changes per hour (ACH) or less.
- Townhomes with attached common walls – 3 ACH in Denver County (Or 0.22cfm/sqft of surface area. Both methods are valid, but surface area tends to be more forgiving than ACH.)
- Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) – 3 ACH in Denver County, different for all municipalities. (Or 0.22cfm/sqft of surface area. Both methods are valid, but surface area tends to be more forgiving than ACH.)
- Additions & Renovations – Good news! As long as the project is permitted under the 2022 Denver Energy Code (DEC), blower door testing is no longer required for additions and renovations. However, inspectors may still request a blower door test.
- Attached Multi-Unit Buildings – To help attached homes pass air leakage tests, guarded testing is often used, which involves running multiple fans to isolate the shared interior walls. The 2021 IECC no longer permits guard testing, but it may still be accepted in counties and projects using earlier versions of the IECC.

How Much Does a Blower Door Test Cost?
We offer cost-effective pricing for blower door testing. Single tests start at $225.
Our pricing includes a framing inspection to pinpoint potential areas of air infiltration before testing begins. This increases your chances of passing on the first attempt, keeping your project on schedule and on budget.
If you fail your blower door test, we use infrared imaging and zone pressure diagnostics to determine where you are having air infiltration issues so you can address them. We will continue to work with you until you pass.
